NSW workers’ compensation insurer icare has renewed a long-standing public cloud agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS), extending the relationship for another three years in a deal valued at $29.1 million.

The renewed contract, which runs until April 2028, continues icare’s access to AWS’ cloud computing infrastructure and was signed under the federal government’s whole-of-government arrangement with the hyperscaler.

“AWS has supported icare cloud infrastructure since 2016,” a spokesperson said.

“The contract aligns with icare and the NSW government’s digital strategy.”

icare was established in 2015 following the introduction of the State Insurance and Care Governance Act, which split regulatory and insurance functions in NSW.

Insurance and care services previously housed within Safety, Return to Work and Support NSW were transitioned into the new entity known as iCare.

AWS was subsequently selected as icare’s primary cloud provider [pdf], hosting its infrastructure and applications, including its core insurance platform.

The platform, which supports policy, billing, and claims management functions, is powered by Guidewire Software.

Capgemini was previously contracted as the primary supplier and system integrator for the platform.

However, icare’s 2023–24 annual report [pdf] noted that IT provider Data#3 was contracted to develop a migration plan to transition a number of applications to AWS.
